There is something hidden in the life of Joy Delamere. This book really deals with some teen issues that many parents miss in their daily lives. How to we truly know when someone is suffering. How much are kids hiding. Joy has been stricken with Asthma for years and after being kept by people and them suffocating her with this illness, Joy wants to be let out. Stuck in an abusive relationship the only way Joy feels she can escape is by becoming a whole new person. Cutting and dying her hair, and faking a kidnapping, Joy escapes into the city of Seattle to find herself. Free some the chains of her family's fear, and her 'boyfriend' Joy soon becomes Triste, and she soon finds herself in the homeless yet somewhat free world of the streets in Seattle. While there are many harsh and harrowing moments in the book, I felt that there was a lot of issues being dealt with very well at once. This is a great book for teens as well as parents, because sometimes parents are missing parts of their children's lives and many times parents need to really look at their kids and talk to them. Joy's story and her development in the book was great to read as it unfolded. These characters were really beautiful to read about and find how they separated themselves and yet how they also grew together and found parts out about them that was undiscovered. The ending was perfect and the flow of the story was seamless.
