The most interesting part of this book is the detailed description of the tenant farmers life particularly in the area of education. I found Agee's thoughts on poverty stricken tenant farmer education very similar to the problems we face today in poverty stricken urban education. Agee believes every human has a right to use their mind beyond basic survival needs. When life is lived on the edge of survival it is impossible to experience a life rich with beauty and love. However, I could have gone without the 200 pages or so of Agee wrestling with guilt and ego issues. Agee writes in a poetic style that is hard to pick up for 20 pages at a time. Like he suggest, I would prefer to read this book in one or a few sittings.
