Very strange book. It had some funny parts, but overall it was just ok.

during the first few essays in this collection, i found myself uncontrollably laughing aloud at practically every paragraph. chuck klosterman may be an irritating roommate, and even an annoying, over-opinionated friend, but his essays on pop culture are brilliant. i suddenly feel as if i understand the sims, although i had to reread the first paragraph of the essay to understand why he was talking about watching himself lying in a pool of his own urine.. (you'll get it when you read it) the book does lose some steam toward the end for me, but i think that may just be because the subjects are a bit more serious/not as entertaining on their own. the book launches with amazing essays on subjects like guns n roses cover bands, lloyd dobbler, pamela anderson vs. marilyn monroe, and the cultural impact of mtv's "the real world" but later spirals into the heavier subjects of serial killers, truth in newspapers, and born-again christians. the transition happens somewhere around the saved by the bell essay. just know you're in for a slightly different kind of book after that point.
