I love verse novels and here we have a spectacular addition to the genre and it's the first I've read and known to tackle historical fiction through poetic forms! Yea! At times, the poetry reads like beautiful prose, so it is amazingly accessible to all readers if if you think you don't like free verse. Second, romance...what else could I ask for? Third, alternating POV! Love, love, love this. Most of the novel alternates between Celestia and Peter, but it also includes poetic pieces by Celestia's father and other women of local communities. All of these voices collide on the fateful day of reckoning/flooding in the spring of 1889.
Honestly, this was a really fun, gripping read. I know this book is for 12 year-olds but this 34 year-old gives it a thumbs up.
I liked this book. The protagonist character format is pure comic book. He is a 6'5" 250 lb martial art and shooting expert. He is of above average intelligence, (a CPA), and proceeds to soak up punishment like Chuck Norris in every movie he has ever been in. The Monster Hunter International organization is based in Alabama and thankfully the author did not write out the accents. Those are always painful to read. Instead he let us know who had a Southern accent and I could then hear the character as I read it. Larry Correia obviously knows a lot about guns and martial arts. I do too, and enjoyed reading well written combat dialog. This makes the book. Unlike a Superman type character, everything the MHI crew deals with in the book is MUCH tougher than them. All of the creatures soak up bullets and explosions and only through teamwork and tactics do they succeed or even survive. The most fun part of this book...Elves and Orcs! I won't go into detail but I loved the way they were handled.
