Read for my Urban Disasters course - Discusses the 1918 Spanish flu outbreak; focuses on the impacts in the town of Norwood, MA. Guess who suffers the most?

Not as amazing as I thought it would be. Just kinda weird. And not the good weird. But it was alright. I knew who the beast was right away.

I had to read this book when I was doing my 'O' levels at school. The first time I read it I resented every page. But then, six months later, stuck for something to read I picked it up and tried again. I had an epiphany moment when I realised that it was funny, touching and wonderful! Nowadays (many years later) I still love this book. I tend to re-read it about once a year when I look at my 'to-read' stack of books and none of them 'grab' me. I can pick it up and start reading almost anywhere and know exactly what has happened before and what is yet to come. This book always feels to me like there isn't a single wasted line in it. Everyone word in every sentence seems to be chosen carefully and perfectly! Can you tell I like it! I wouldn't normally bother adding in *everything* I've read previously (I'd rather spend the time actually reading!), but some books are so important it makes sense to add them! Update after another read At work we have just started a book circle, and this was the book that we read for our second meeting, at my suggestion. I was looking forward to reading it again, but when I came to sit down and do just that I took a while to get started. The problem wasn't the book. My wife was taken seriously ill, and was hospitalised. I ended up sitting by her bedside for extended periods, a time which would have been perfect for reading, but I wasn't feeling P&P at all. I read lots of other books in the same time, but for some reason I didn't want to read this much loved work while my real life was in such turmoil. My wife is now getting better thanks to speedy intervention, modern medicine and the NHS. And I got to sit and read this book. Once again, while I was in the right frame of mind it was a warm hug of a book. A safe refuge once I no longer needed a refuge! And talking about it at the book circle was a pleasure too.

Really interesting story! I love that the photographs are authentic photos found in old antique stores and flea markets. Really cool way to bring vintage photography to life!

I love the illustrations. Bear watches the leaves fall for the first time, then he makes a nest and sleeps until spring when the leaves sprout again. Cute story.
