I was so excited to read Wicked... what a great concept, right? And I've found that to be universally true about people that pick it up. Talk about a great idea gone wrong! Some of it was well done; other parts (like the last half), not so much. Preachy, bizarre, conveniently fading to black for both the audience and Elphaba for her entire pregnancy.... Right. I couldn't figure out who to feel sympathy for except for myself and my book club for having to read it. Anyone who went into the book wanting to really know why she was the way she was is confounded. On the other hand, we learn that Oz was not an ideal place. It was so not ideal that in every corner there were political injustices and in college Elphaba became a political protestor. Wow, you don't say. The tone is wildly varied: It's funny! It's fun! It's dry! Oh, wait, now it's incredibly political. It's a tragedy. And then she dies... and it's an accident! And nobody cares. Including us.

Probably a lot more interesting if I had an interest in 16th century history.
