As the winner of the Man Booker Prize 2010, I thought that this was going to be great. It wasn't. I don't know whether I missed something but the characters ranged from annoying to detestable, there didn't seem a lot of plot and much of it seemed down-right ignorant. Perhaps that was the point but, if so, it was a pretty dim way of making a point. I can't deny that some of the prose was beautifully written and there were moments of emotional poignancy but these were sadly lost in my reading. Sad.
