The "meat and potatoes" of the NA fellowship. When I first got sober, this book gave me sanity. Not many other books can hold this claim. Personally, i feel the stories in the back of this book better than the one's featured in the AA Big Book. Anyone who doesn't know what recovery is about, or wants to get sober should read this book.
What can I say about Nick Twisp that you aren't already thinking? He's perverted, he's smart, he's dangerous, and he's out to get me! I read this book in two days like I was smoking rock out of a chimney. The way Payne writes it, life comes in two flavors: acerbic and bitter. But we make the best out of it, and we always always always gotta go for the girl no matter what, no matter how ridiculous and unpleasant and grueling and humiliating the journey is. Because pretty girls have low self esteem and that gives average guys a better chance. "Wait," you might be saying. "Is that really the point of the novel?" Well, I don't know, probably not. That shit was probably an existential voyage into the mind of oppressed and struggling artists. But when I think about it, man, all I can remember is how fucking awesome that summer was, and how those characters will probably resonate with me for a long time. Especially the girls. I will always remember Sheeni and Apurva.
This book is an easy read and it changed my life! I have read it several times.
