To be honest, I'm a little surprised I liked this book. I like sci-fi, but I would have guessed that a book sequel to the classic movies would have been awful. However, Zahn pulls off a really fun read. It actually got me to read several other books in the star wars universe (none of which were any good). The key to this book is the villain, who is perhaps the best villain in any series I've read. The villain's power lies in his awesome intellect, and it is scarily compelling. In most books, the 'evil genius' becomes conveniently idiotic at exactly the point that would be the most convenient for the plot. The brilliance of this series, is that when the villain makes mistakes, he does so for all the right reasons - and you come away thinking that even though he got it wrong, he still is smarter than the good guys (and the reader for that matter). You don't need to know much about the star wars universe in order to enjoy these books but you should probably have seen the original Star Wars movies, or there will be things that won't make sense.
