I initially thought of giving this book a 4-star rating, but after I leafed through it again, 3.5 is more appropriate. To those who wish to read this book, or plan to read it in the near future, or intend to buy it, please do not be disheartened by my rating. We might not necessarily have the same perspective and preference. In terms of the story of the cat, Dewey, and his role in the library he lived in, Spencer Public Library, I like it very very much. Although the author used her own imagination as if it's the cat's own perspective, that didn't bother me one bit. In fact, that makes the storyline even more interesting and funny, especially when you are already a cat lover. However, when it came to history of Iowa, its people, its culture, etc, that's where I found the book to be a tiny bit boring. Sometimes the history might be useful in explaining the background of people living in Iowa, and how that is related to the library cat will be revealed later. But at times, it's just plain history-telling and I find it "yawning" (if there's such word). I'm also not in agreement with the author when it came to how the cat's life ended. That factor might also have affected my decision in ranking this book. After all is said and done, please, go ahead and read it. It's a very good read nevertheless.
