I can see this as an investigation of Genesis, I can see this as a mid-seventies reinvention of the "how do we people live in harmony with our world" wheel, that was finally published when the next generation was ripe for re-re-re-inventing that wheel (in the early 90s). I can see this as one man's Vision Quest. I am sure that by achieving widespread distribution, Mr. Quinn has achieved his goal of spreading the gospel of living peaceably within the world rather than above its laws. It was interesting to follow along with his inductive reasoning, toward character revelations. I could certainly offer it to my middle-schooler as a way to think about relationships, and definitions, and group psychology. And I suppose the world. I'm not entirely sure that Mr. Quinn did his homework enough to look at this as an anthropological exposition of the Arabian peninsula, but then, the novel is classified as a /novel/, perhaps a self-help book, not a history. Writers frequently write for their own exploration, supported by our desire at large to glimpse their machinations and artifice.
