I expected a good read - I didn't expect to be moved. It's the kind of book that stays with you for a few days...
Apparently a musical (by Pete Townsend, no less!) was also borne out of this story around the same time that I got this as a present from an auntie, so the book and the album are interconnected in my head. A beautiful story, and Brad Bird's debut adaptated animation of this is also really lovely. Good stories will withstand the test of adaptation, and this is one of those.
Fascinating account of a lit professor's life in Iran during the Islamic Revolution and rule. I love how she uses what she knows best- literature (and what many readers will understand better) to describe a nearly incomprehensible culture and government. Opened my eyes to a world I never had given much to before with her insights into both classic literature and the effect of such a government/culture. I also loved her descriptions, especially those that took on the form of recall (starting with one key, memorable moment or object and then building up the scene around/up to that point).
