What is a graceling? It is a person blessed with a special talent/"grace" and is identifiable by his/her two differently colored eyes. In the case of our teen protagonist, Katsa, it is a talent for killing. Great, huh? Additionally, gracelings are usually exploited by their rulers and feared by everyone else. Katsa has other unique challenges. Both of her parents are dead, and her grace is being exploited by her uncle, the king. But she has also found a way to use her grace for good--by using it to help/rescue people in need. During a rescue, she meets another graceling, Po. And there's something different about him. They form a bond almost immediately and understand each other as no one has understood either individual previously. Of course, romance ensues. But this isn't just a teen romance cloaked under the guise of fantasy. It is a fantasy novel full of adventure. It is also a tender romance between two young adults. I really liked this novel, but felt the pace slow down during the last quarter of the book. So, only 4 stars.
