I loved these linked essays about the various pleasures of reading and reading one's own books. What reader wouldn't take to this concept: stop bringing in more books and read what you have accumulated through the years in your own house? She is wise, well-read, well-connected to the British literary scene and observant. I don't think I have ever read her novels--the first one published when she was 18. Hill's year of reading sort of matched a similar project of mine--when my public library was closed for a month, I decided to only read books I owned. She lists 40 not to be missed books at the end, and I have already started The Last September by Elizabeth Bowen. A treasure.
Perceptive coming of age story.
I thought the book was bizarre and gloomy to read. I kept waiting for it to get to the point. I do appreciate how historically significant his style was and how Anderson influenced Steinbeck in his common man characters. He wrote about what they are thinking, not what they're saying.
