This is potentially one of the most 'fun' books that I have ever read. Gary Schmidt teaches literature at Calvin College, and he gives us in this award-winning book a memorable tale that I would place in the genre of historical fiction. Though not well-known, a few of the characters actually lived in the places mentioned. Schmidt once commented that it was not fair to call his book an "adolescent novel" unless one wants to label Grisham's books "senile novels." Though catering to a younger audience, the book skilfully touches on many real-to-life topics such as racism, parental conflict, poverty, social injustice, religious hypocrisy, etc. One of my favorite characters in the book is the wind. No wait, it's the whale. You will have to read it to understand. I finished this book in four hours (a fast reader could do it in two or three). I imagine most readers smiling their way through it, like I did.
