** spoiler alert ** Frankie is 12 and feeling very disconnected from the world. Her mother is dead, her father is distant, and her best friend moved away, which leaves her just the housekeeper (Berenice) and a very young cousin (John Henry) for company. She dreams about going away with her brother and his fiancee after their wedding and really starts to believe it is going to happen. It's mostly about these three characters, their histories, their emotional states. Frankie does have a "date" with a soldier that is scary (near sexual experience) and eventually the wedding happens and she is devestated when she can't go on the honeymoon. Themes: troubled adolescence, difficult pasts and difficults futures, sexual/emotional confusion, Berenice as counter-point to Frankie. This was a good read - pretty quick. It was interesting despite not much happening. Frankie was a spot-on 12-year-old. She thought of herself as very wise and important but was quite naiive. It was sad that John Henry died in the end. Pieces of Berenice's history were very sad and surprising also.
