This is an unlikely but nevertheless engrossing tale. Marina is a laboratory scientist in Minnesota, working on statins and cholesterol. Her lab partner, Anders, is sent by their boss to the River Negro to find Dr. Swenson, Marina's former teacher in med school. Dr Swenson is leading researcher, but also a difficult woman who refuses to be found, and refuses to report on the progress of her research to her employer, who is understandably anxious to find out what they are spending their moony on and when they can expect to see a return on investment. When Anders disappears and then dies in South America, Marina reluctantly agrees to follow his footsteps in order to find out what happened and complete his mission. I've read some fiction and non-fiction about the Amazon. This is hands down the best in terms of description of life in this area of the world. And although the plot is improbable, I found it fascinating.
