Absolutely loved this book. Having been to Ethiopia a few years ago (volunteering at a hospital) I was instantly transported back to my visit with the descriptions of the people, food, and unfortunately, medical problems affecting so many Ethiopians (genitourinary fistulae, difficulty in accessing to adequate prenatal and postpartum care, etc). I found the historical aspects of the book fascinating and filled in many of the gaps of my limited knowledge of the country and the political history. Each character was carefully crafted with his or own personal history and the relationship to others in the book. Even for someone who hasn't been to Ethiopia or is interested in the medical field, this book describes rich and often complex relationships between the characters and I frequently found myself in tears as it described heart-felt or heart-wrenching moments. A few sections I found to drag on a little bit, but perhaps it was necessary to tie up some of the loose ends. I would especially recommend this book to anyone in the medical field, particularly those with interest in developing countries, but anyone would enjoy this read.
I love time travel stories and this is one of the best! Terrific tale and some interesting history. And this is one book where I absolutely adored the ending. I am more than occasionally disappointed by books’ endings, but this one was perfect.
