California Schemin' got me hooked after a few pages, and I couldn't stop reading until I got to the last page. Kate George's novel is fast-paced, funny, and operates way outside of the traditional mystery box. Bree MacGowan may share some qualities with famous predecessors like Kinsey Milhone and Stephanie Plum, but she is a unique character and very much her own woman. She's clever, confident, determined, and she has a unique ability to generate chemistry with all kinds of men - boyfriend, friends, cops, kidnappers, thugs - while never crossing the line into disloyalty. Ms. George feeds us a delightful dose of ambiguity, moral and otherwise. While some of the men and women in the story are clearly good guys and others are rotten to the core, there are some major characters whose motives remain elusive throughout, and they and the story are all the more interesting because of this. California Schemin' is engaging and quite enjoyable from beginning to end. I highly recommend it!

I'm one of those people who HATES to know things that the characters take forever to figure out. Kinda ruins things for me. There were too many hints at things that were glaringly obvious that *somehow* the characters didn't get until the end. Otherwise, I really enjoyed it. Love the characters and dialogue.
