This is a terrific big book. Phillip is flawed in so many ways; he hurts people, he's selfish, and his devotion to Mildred is confounding. Yet you realize as the book goes on that Maugham is showing people as they really are instead of how you'd like them to be, and he rewards his main character at the end with a big wallop of grace.
