I tried. I tried repeatedly, but I just couldn't get into this book. I normally love Nick Hornby, and I'm very frustrated and disappointed with myself for this failure. Maybe I'm just too American (we really don't get soccer, or football as everyone else calls it), or maybe it's because I'm not much of a sports fan. I can sit and watch a football game (American football) with my husband or in a social setting, and on occasion, I have been known to watch some baseball on my own, but I'm not really what one would call a fan. This book was just a non-stop stream of names of players and scores, and lists of games which were played before I was even old enough to go to school. I still love Nick Hornby, though. I'll just have to wait for him to write more fiction.
