An account of how humble James Gatz came under the spell of Daisy, whose voice sounded "like money", and how he was forced to develop a new thriving personality to such an extent that he changed his name to the glamorous and fresh-sounding one of Jay Gatsby. Fitzgerald develops and account of Gatsby's story, the source of his fortune covered by an obscure mantle of rumours about his present and past, narrated by Nick Carraway. Nick can chose between following Gatsby's steps, living fast and enjoying the pompous and exciting existence during the american Jazz Age, or keeping his feet on the ground and going back to his roots. Fitzgerald once again insists on how important it is to respect our origins and avoid falling for what is "shiny" - as in "Tender is the Night", money is just an illusion, and Fitzgerald proves through his character's tormentuous lives that it cannot solve every problem. "The Great Gatsby"'s message is surely close to the necessity of keeping the superficial and banal partying as a mere accessory and not the main part of one's life and the reason for other's respect and social recognition.
