I'm not necessarily a big fan of the gaelic monsters/fey, so this didn't appeal to me that much at first. I also thought that the author should have developed the main character more. You follow her on adventures, but I didn't really know much about her and didn't feel much for her. I did eventually get over the gaelic stuff and enjoy the action of the book at least.
Palaniuk has some good ideas, but he drives them into the ground by overwriting. He always seems to try and shock the hell out of you instead of just letting us enjoy his imagery and humor.
In 1982, I was an unemployed 20 year old with a B.A. in English, and had no idea what I wanted to do. Then I read this book. It sent me back to college, and I'm now finishing up my 24th year of playing with computers (software) for a living. So I guess you could say this book had a pretty big impact on my life. If you read because you want to experience the lives of others, Kidder is a great choice.
