I haven't read the Day of the Locust, but Miss Lonelyhearts is dark and funny and surreal and intense and profound. Have I mentioned witty? I highly recommend, but not for the faint of heart ("heart!" hehehehe). Not like it's gross or violent or anything -- far from it. Just very dark in terms of sensibility
