This book has a very interesting premise, and a dark one. The United States has experienced an uprising, and the government now rules with an iron fist. In District 12, home of Katniss Everdeen, coal mining is the premier occupation, and since her father died in a mining accident, 16 year old Katniss has cared for her mother and her sister. Their part of District 12 is very poor, and Katniss does everything she can to keep her family fed, including poaching in the woods surrounding their town. Every year, the Hunger Games are held, where young people between the ages of 11-18 are chosen to compete to the death for the prize of a life of leisure. Katniss's sister's number is called, but Katniss takes her place, and goes through interesting rites to prepare her for the frightening events ahead. A young man name Peeta is also chosen from her town, and their friendship develops over the course of this terrible event. Any more would include spoilers, but this is well worth the read--quite a page-turner. The Hunger Games reminded me of Graceling, due to the very strong natures of the young female main characters.
